XV issue: X cpu-usage jumps to 80+% on resolutions > 640x480

If i play a video on my tv with a resolution higher than 640x480 the X cpu usage jumps to 80+%.

What i tried:

mplayer -vo xv -nosound -vf scale=800:600 video.avi

Cpu usage 80+%

mplayer -vo xv -nosound -vf scale=640:480 video.avi

Cpu usage 3%

"-vf scale" performs software scaling. From the mplayer man page description of the scale video filter:

"Scales the image with the software scaler (slow) and performs a YUV<->RGB colorspace conversion (also see -sws)."

Yeah its a software scaler but its the only way to view a video thats normally 1280 x 720. If i view a video in that resolution the xserver needs around 90% cpu. If i add the software scaler and scale it to 640:480 it runs fine.

here the nvidia-log

To make it clear ... mpeg4 mpeg2 dvd ... everything above 640x480 brings 90%+ xserver cpu usage.

Am I the only one who cant play dvds on his tv anymore? Is my card broken?

I rerolled to x86 from amd64 ... exactly the same problem. I even have some ugly stripes in my dvd picture ... it looks like two frames get badly mixed together. this might be just the result of high cpu load ... If I start X on two displays the xvideo output on the second screen reaches 90% cpu load.

... good old mx400 and 6xxx driver version was running just fine ....
