By "the physical size of the screen is wrong," you could mean two things:
  1. The physical size is detected incorrectly: You can override this with the DisplaySize option in the Monitor section of xorg.conf.
  2. The physical size is different for each RandR mode: This is intended behavior to keep the DPI constant at the different modes. See the ConstantDPI option in http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-d.html
Hope that helps!

Re: xrandr is wrong?? physical display size wrong too..

If the DPI is not kept constant, then applications that read the DPI (such as any GTK+ application) will display text in a different (pixel) size depending on which mode the screen was in when the app was started. Users were confused by this behavior, hence the default that attempts to keep the pixels sizes the same.
