geforce 8800gtx, 9746 driver and X lockup
 

Greetings,

recently I've bought a new gigabyte geforce 8800gtx video card and now I try to make it work with X. The problem is that after installing the driver, editing xorg.conf and running 'startx' the nvidia logo shows up fullscreen and then after a few seconds the X server freezes (I can ping / ssh the workstation so it didn't freeze completely).

I've uploaded a photo representing the problem, the nvidia-bug-report.log and my xorg.conf. Please, help.

I see two problems in your bug report. First, you're not using the glx module that ships with the NVIDIA X driver. Second, you don't have the required libwfb library, which also ships with the NVIDIA X driver. Both of these indicate that the NVIDIA X driver was not correctly or fully installed.

Hmm, the same thing happens when I disable glx... I've also heard that wfb should be loaded when `module extmod` is listed in xorg.conf. Gonna check that in a while and get back on this to you.

Yeah, that was the problem. I've switched to nvidia glx and it works fine. However, there is a little problem with switching back to tty* console. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F(1-6) causes lockup - black screen. ssh or ctrl+alt+del work but I can't see a thing on my monitor (I can't even switch back to X with ctrl+alt+F7).

Any ideas?

That's a known bug which can be eliminated by not using console framebuffer graphics.

Hm.. not using console framebuffer at all? It's only a vesafb, not rivfb or anything else. The same driver worked fine with this framebuffer with my old FX5900 Ultra card just fine. Strange.

Are there any other known workarounds?

vesafb is a console framebuffer implimentation.

Well yeah, I'm aware of that. I'm just telling that using vesa framebuffer and 9746 driver didn't cause any problems when I was using 5900Ultra (switching to ttys worked fine) and now with the 8800gtx the problem occurs. So that makes me think: where's the problem?

The problem is with the G80 based card & console framebuffer graphics.
