1.0-7184 install problem / OpenGL problem as well

i Have:
Fedora core 5
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7184-pkg1 installer (correct for my GeForce 4000 MX i think the card is)
kernel 2.6.19-1.2288.2.1.fc5smp

installer gets to 100% of 'building' kernel then quits saying it can't be built.

i did get this to compile under a different kernel, but somewhere along the line I have corrupted openGL - my main software (puredata / GEM) reports:
