GeForce 6600 brightness problems in Ubuntu 6.10

I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 and everything works fine, however, after I install the NVIDIA drivers (whether through Automatix or from the bin file from the Nvidia site) and enable the nvidia driver in my xorg.conf file, X Windows starts fine, I get the Nvidia logo but the screen is really dark and shifted over to the right. Tried using the controls on the monitor to fix the placement but it won't let me change anything even though I could when I didn't have hardware acceleration enabled and I can't fix the brightness issue. Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks in advance.

I think you should look for a timing problem. When you get the video timing right, the shifting will be fixed and probably the brightness will be OK again.

But first you need to read the "read this before reporting a problem" post.

Here is the Nvidia log file. I might also mention I've tried several version of the drivers and none have worked, still same issue with the screen placement and the brightness.

I searched around on google for how to change the timing but didn't come up with anything, how can you change that?

Thanks.

1.0-8776 is no longer supported. If this problem persists with 1.0-9755, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then generate a new bug report.

I tried starting X like that but it killed my X server, is there a way to start GDM with a higher logging mode? Here's the bug report from the updated drivers though.

I don't understand what you mean by 'killed the X server'. X needs to be shutdown before you can start it again. Nothing in this process requires GDM to be running.

I shut down gdm and X with

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

then if I try to start X again with startx, X tries to start up and then just closes. I can restart gdm and everything works normally though.

One of the earlier posters mentioned changing the timing might fix my problem, can anyone point me in the direction of how to do that? Thanks.

If X is failing to start, you should look at the X log to determine why.

The only way that you can change the timings is with a custom modeline. gtf can generate one for you.
