my system:

AMD FX-60 (X2 64bits)
Abit AV8-3rd Eye with latest Bios version (v28) chipset Via K8T880pro
2Gb Ram DDR
Nvidia FX5600Turbo (256Mb)
Audigy 2 platinum
Raid PCI Kronwell Silicon Image PCI0680 chip with 4 HDD (all disabled)
SO: Kubuntu Edgy 6.10 with Kernel 2.6.17-11.35-x86_64
Nvidia 1.0.9755 drivers

Modprobe error to load Nvidia module (kernel oops) in installation driver from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9755-pkg2.run (dmesg kernel oops error)(1)

rebooting system manually in Normal mode: but black screen in Xorg sesssion with "nvidia" driver. "nv" works. (no dmesg kernel oops error)(2)

rebooting in Recovery mode. edit Xorg.conf for change "nv" driver to "nvidia"

modprobe nvidia: kernel oops. kdm start = black screen, one "beep" in mobo speaker and system not responding (kernel panic?)

rebooting system in Recovery mode (nvidia module active but no kernel opps error (3)). change "nvidia" to "nv". kdm start = X session OK

Try adding these parameters to your grub startup line :
noapic nolapic

Also, if this is a fresh system I can only encourage you to try out the soon-to-be-released Ubuntu 7.04. It have the latest drivers for Nvidia in the repo.
