Mushkin XP2 PC2-8500 - Any good?

Hi guys. So I'm going to be upgrading my computer at the end of the month (when the intel price drops occur). Here's what I'm looking at getting:

C2D Q6600
Asus P5B-Deluxe
eVGA 8800GTX

Now I'm going to aim for a overclock of 3.2GHz on the Q6600...I think that's reasonable. Maybe just 3.0...But anyways, I noticed today in NCIX.com's weekly sale that they have the Mushkin XP2 PC2-8500 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-4-12 on sale for $250 Canadian! (with the $50 rebate). That's $188 off!

So my question is is this good ram? I was only going to get PC2-6400 rated ram...because I didnt' really need the extra MHz...I was going to drop the multiplier on the Q6600 to 8 and put the FSB at 400...so 800MHZ DDR2 would be fine. But with this stuff I could drop the multy to 6, FSB @ 533 and get the same thing....Is this practical? Is there any need to do this? I just think this is too good of a deal to pass up....

Oh and I want to get to sets of this (4GB total). Does the P5B-Deluxe have any problems with 4 sticks of RAM that I should know about?

Thanks guys!

This is a great deal. I'd say go ahead with it.

Also, I think the p5b-del has no problems, especially with the layest bios.

If you dont intend on OCing it further thatn 1066, then it should not matter if its good ram or not. :p
besides I dont see it on this list either.
(hell, Im sure even the P5Bdlx would struggle a big getting past 533 fsb.)

Ahh... We got a smart one. taking advantage of RAM bandwidth ;)

Youre right - if you drop the multi to 6 and run 533 fsb, you will get a noticable performance boost. But note that youre putting strain on your NB chip (memory controller) - so be sure to put a fan on the board's heatsink.

Ok so I think I've decided I'm going to go for this deal....It just seems like such a good deal...

For you P5B-Deluxe owners out there...is it possible to hit 533 FSB? Or am I going to have a problem getting it that high? I guess I could always Go with a 7x multi with a 460ish FSB. That still gets me 3.2GHz but would allow me to tighten the timings on the ram a bit...

That is a good deal. Those use the Micron D9 chips, not the fastest D9s but still very good. Got to 3.6 stable with a 9 mult. with my present board.

Sounds like a good deal. Have you read about the memory? I thing THG had a recent article. Patriot is highly rated and affordable.

Fixed.

I used patriot about 3 years ago. I had issues with them and I swore then that I would not use anything less than Corsair.

that ram should be good, I have the Redline XP2 DDR2 1000 PC2 8000 ram and it works good :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to order a pair of sets tomorrow. I have 2GB Mushkin DDR 500 in my current rig and couldn't be happier with it. So I think these will be great. And I don't expect I'll have to overclock them at all....so as long as they run at their rated speeds, I'll be set.

honestly, you don't, I really haven't OC mine, they give me no probs in games at their factory clocks, and since the set you are getting is faster than mine, you should be set without OC :D

Re: Mushkin XP2 PC2-8500 - Any good?

Yeah I don't expect to have to overclock them at all....I'll probably run them quite a bit under their rated speeds....but that's fine with me because I'm getting them for $75 (canadian) cheaper than the PC2-6400 stuff.....such a good deal!

Its good ram, but id get the Crucial ballistix pc2-8000. less than 200 after rebate now. Also, the p5b deluxe is a good board, but it does have some quirks. e.g. double restarts, setting nb vcore > 1.45 causes PCIe link width to be stuck to 1x. Theres better 965 boards out now, specifically the asus commando, abit quadgt, and the dfi infinity 965-s. the 965-s is just starting to come around now, id expect it to be instock most places within two weeks. Wait till later in april for the price cuts and grab the DFI 965 board.
