6600GT - garbled textmode after starting X

I have a Gigabyte Geforce 6600GT (agp8x, 128mb) on a Asus P4P800 board, and with the new drivers, starting X makes the textmode VT's unusable (garbled display, still accepts keyboard input) until i reboot the machine. Anyone else have a similar problem?

This problem occurs when using "real" vga textmode, but i can't check it on framebuffer console, because when trying to use it the kernel boots with a blank screen - this must be a problem with my card, motherboard, or BIOS - i doubt it has anything to do with the drivers.

Any help/info would be appreciated.

Re: 6600GT - garbled textmode after starting X
Update: This looks more like a bug in Xorg, since it occurs even when using the vesa drivers on this card. I'll have to test with a different video card.
