Fatal server error using 100.14.06

1 Attachment(s)
I installed the new 100.14.06 drivers using the .run installer. When I reboot or start X I get a fatal server error and a backtrace. I get the same error when I used to 100.14.03 driver.

From :0.log (gdm) and/or Xorg.0.log :

Code:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80c5d91]
1: [0xffffe420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

I am using Ubuntu 7.04 and a XFX GeForce 7600 GS.

Please make sure /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx no longer exists; if it does, please remove it per the instructions in the sticky thread and re-install the driver.

It doesn't exist.

Code:

erik@zoidberg:~$ ls -la /etc/init.d/nvidia*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 860 2005-10-29 04:48 /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel

/etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel is the same thing. You should not have anything related to the NVIDIA driver in /etc/init.d.

Ok, I removed that, re-installed the driver, rebooted and still get the same backtrace and server error.

If the driver works fine before rebooting, and not afterwards, then this isn't an nvidia driver bug. I don't know what else you have on your system which may be breaking the driver installation at boot up.

The driver doesn't work fine before rebooting. The module loads, but if I start X, either manual or through a reboot doesn't make a difference. On both accounts I get the server error and backtrace.

If it worked fine I would be having kickass 3D graphics and I would be a happy camper, but it doesn't even start X.

If you switch to the 'nv' X driver, or comment out 'glx' in xorg.conf (with the nvidia X driver) does X still crash?

If I switch to the nv driver X loads just fine.

If I comment out glx I get a comment that it failed to load the glx module and I get the backtrace again.

Code:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.  If
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0):    reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

Backtrace:
0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80c5d91]
1: [0xffffe420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

So, it would seem to me that the problem is the nvidia driver itself.

If I set nvagp to 0 it also works. But now I am not using agp I guess.
