Pioneer DFP/ GeForce4 DVI-HDMI Finally got 1080i but doesn't look right...

My apologies for the long thread title. Just wanted to be descriptive in case someone else gets this problem.

I was following along with another thread in here someone else unable to get 1080i on their Pioneer DFP. My symptoms were the same, and adding ModeValidation "NoVertRefreshCheck" allowed me to startx at 1080i, but it doesn't look right...here is a picture:

What was that picture of, the carpet? :D

Add to the xorg.conf

Code:

      Option  "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
Doubtful the result is perfect, let's start there and see if it'll try to play nice with your custom modelines.

Re: Pioneer DFP/ GeForce4 DVI-HDMI Finally got 1080i but doesn't look right...

Didn't change anything.

One interesting thing is, I feel like I have changed every possible combination of the ModeValidation parameters. In every case one of two things happens:

1) I get pretty good quality 720p resolution
2) I get 1080i resolution that is very distorted (IE if I right click, the context menu pops up several inches above where the mouse is, there are many weird vertical lines etc"

In all cases, they do not fit on the screen properly (IE the KDE Menu is not visible on the screen. ) This is even the case during POST and before X-Window starts at boottime.

Might I need to reduce it from 1920x1080 to something like 1910x1074? If so would I change it in the modeline, create a new Display SubSection, or both?

Thanks.

Re: Pioneer DFP/ GeForce4 DVI-HDMI Finally got 1080i but doesn't look right...

Hey guys,
I fixed the Modelines in my xorg.conf (they were previously copied and pasted from the other Pioneer post). It turns out that on my first modeline only the last number was off and it was only off by one. I also cleaned up my xorg.conf a bit and changed the modevalidation parameters. I am still getting 1080i, and it looks bad but not quite as bad as in the previous pictures.

Here is what it looks like now: Pic 1 Pic 2

Also, Powerstrip told me that my max Vsync was 61 and my max Hsync was 46.

Is it better to have a single number for the Hsync and Vsync or a range? For example:

A)
#HorizSync 15.0-46.0
#VertRefresh 49.0-61.0

or

B)
HorizSync 45.0
VertRefresh 60.0

Interesting first line of the Mode Validation:

(II) NVIDIA(0): --- Building ModePool for PIO PRO-R06 (DFP-0) ---
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1920x1080":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1920 x 540 @ 60 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: EDID
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 74.25 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1920, 2008
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 2052, 2200
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 540, 542
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 547, 562
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : +/+
(II) NVIDIA(0): Extra : Interlaced
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode is valid.

Re: Pioneer DFP/ GeForce4 DVI-HDMI Finally got 1080i but doesn't look right...

If I add "NoEdidModes" to ModeValidation it reverts back to 720p.

Edit: My apologies for all the bumps, it just seems like people are pretty stumped on this one so I figured the more observations I could add, the better.

Getting pretty close to giving up on this and installing Windows and maybe running Linux in a VM. Anyone got anything I might have missed?

That driver you're running is pretty old:
Code:

/proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module  1.0-8776  Mon Oct 16 21:56:04 PDT 2006
GCC version:  gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1-r3)

Gentoo? EEK!!

Go get the latest driver dude.

The Drivers you linked me do not support my card, but I downloaded the appropriate legacy driver.

Installing shortly....

Re: Pioneer DFP/ GeForce4 DVI-HDMI Finally got 1080i but doesn't look right...

I updated my drivers to the latest one that supports my card. I decided to start from a clean slate. I removed all ModeValidation options, all the modelines that say "my" I generated with Powerstrip. The one that says "your" I found from the EDID during previous modevalidation process. It now boots at 480p.
