GLX in 8bit mode

Hi all,

When running the xserver (Xorg 6.8.2, 100.14.11 nvidia drivers, GeForce FX 5200 chipset) in 8bit color mode I'm getting the following error in the command line:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

This does not occur when running in higher color modes (eg 16bit etc).
Looking at the 8bit xorg.log and comparing with that of 16bit I see that the following lines are missing in the 8bit log prior to GLX initialization:

(II) Loading extension NV-GLX
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized

Does the nvidia GLX extension support 8bit color? If not, is there a way of loading a different module specificaly for lower color modes?

Thanks!

No, GLX is not supported at depths 8 or 15.

Hi AaronP, thanks for the reply. I suspected that was the case. Is it possible to load a different glx module specificaly for 8bit color (ie. to fall back to software rendering in the 8bit case)?

Regards

You could try Mesa, though I don't know off the top of my head whether it supports GLX at depth 8.

Thanks again, I'll try that.
