hard freeze during xorg startup
 
hi guys,
i am trying to run xorg on a freebsd 6.2 box with a geforce 7900gs attached.

the problem is, that the box totally freezes after startup of x(no ssh login, .. possible), so i get no logfiles or anything else, that would help.

the configuration of xorg.conf is fine(tested on several boxes), i also installed the latest freebsd driver (100.14.11, manually adapted paths in the installer), after trying to run it with the one from the ports collection.

i read several postings in bbs, groups, etc. but no one of the suggested tips(upgrading bios, deinstalling libGL from the ports, disabling smp in kernel,..) did help out.

so i am hoping that probably in here someone can help me.
any advise appreciated :-)

i have the same video card
and it works fine with freebsd 6.2 + xorg 7.2
have you run nvidia-xconfig before running xorg with the new driver?
does ctrl-shift-backspace exit the x, or it is really cold freezed? :)

of course i did nvidia-xconfig(although it's nothing else than enabling glx and replacing the drivername in the config file) and it's definitely a hard freeze :-)

i know it's quite hard to have an answer in this case, because of the fact, that no log files or anything else is attached(as they are not existent).
i'll compile a debug kernel and post the kdb output asap.
maybe this will help out.

I am seeing this as well and have been on both 6.2 and 7-beta2. I was wondering how you did on this and any suggestions on troubleshooting. Running with

startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5

outputs something to the screen before going to the x-console. However, it freezes before the mouse comes up. Also, nothing is logged and box has to be hard cycles. I can only do so much of this with the background fsck taking 30 minutes after this.

Any suggestions welcome.

I do not know if it is related, but here is a bug I reported to nVidia about memory remapping:
I ran into an issue where my (new Q6600-based) system would reboot or completely lock up upon running X with v100.14.1{1,9} and an XFX 8800GTS card. The nv driver did not exhibit any problems. OTOH, it did not exhibit fast 3D graphics either. :) It turned out that even though I did not have PAE enabled in the kernel, having "memory remapping" enabled (the default) in the BIOS was enough to cause the panic. No cores were generated and the screen was blank (black with the backlight on).

Assuming that the driver does not support memory remapping, I thought this would make for a nice addition to the FAQ in the README. If possible, maybe the (i386) driver could detect the memory remapping and cause X to exit with a log entry about the remapping not being supported?

Has anyone figured out a solution to this problem? I have tried nvidia-xconfig and modifiying the /etc/xorg.conf file by hand. I have check my mobo bios and memory remapping is turned off and i only have 1G of ram in my system. I even tried a fresh install with fbsd 7 using the generic kernel and compiling Xorg, nvidia, and fluxbox from ports and even using the default X wm and no matter what after a couple minutes X hard freezes and needs a power cycle.

Asus P5B deluxe : nv7900gt : 2GB RAM corsair :

I have used successfully NVIDEA-drivers on FreeBSD 6.1 and 6.2.
Then I increased the RAM from 2GB to 4GB (FreeBSD 6.2).
Only this action (only this!) caused a total freeze at startx& early!

Now I use FreeBSD 7.0.
The newest NVIDEA-driver causes a total freeze ...

I have solved the problem:

4GB RAM physical.
3GB RAM usable with memory_remapping,
2GB RAM usable without mem_remapping and NVIDEA-driver works.

Xorg Hangs at startup when memory remap in BIOS on or off.
FreeBSD 7-STABLE i386, Asus MF(Intel x38 chipset), 8Gb RAM, 8800GTX, drivers - 173.14.12 and 177.13 - both totaly hang computer (ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+bkspc, PowerButton no effect, only hard reset) and no Xorg.log generated.

yep ... but the mass of mobos (with intel chipset) on the market dont have such option in bios

I have tried the new drivers and after a few minutes the machine locked up and needed a kick to the power to recover. I ran the nvidia-bug-report.sh script a minute before the machine locked up.
