X Server problem during linux installation - any idea? --PROBLEM SOLVED!!! READ BELOW

Please help! I don't think it's a difficult thing, but i need your help! :)

I have an (Asus) nVidia 8600GT silent video card [AMD Athlon 3600+ X2 64bit, Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard, 2 GB DDR2 ram, SATA disk].

I successfully installed Scientific Linux (SL) v5 i386 32-bit version on my sistem [SL is based on Fedora Linux https://www.scientificlinux.org/]. All was ok.

Now i want to install Scientific Linux (SL) v5 x86_64 64-bit version on my computer, but installation won't work. This is the problem:

I boot from dvd; i got the very first initialization commands; the sata_nv driver is correctly loaded; and then I got thess messages:

Running Anaconda, the Scientific Linux Sistem Installer - please wait
Probing for video card: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0402
Attempting to start X Server
Waiting for X Server to start...

Then i got blank screen and the monitor goes in sleep mode - but i have reasons to believe that the system has not hanged and that there is actually the first graphical installation screen "behind" the blank screen, because the system responds to my input but I bobviously can't see what's going on.

I also tried to boot the installation process with the following options:

linux noprobe
linux resolution=800x600
linux noprobe resolution=800x600
linux noapic

but it did not worked :(

Someone has got any idea? Thanks in advance.

This is likely caused by bugs in the X server on the install disc. Does SL have a text-based installer that you can use?

Re: X Server problem during linux installation - any idea?

Yes, i tried with

linux text

option and i can get farther with installation. I create the partions ext3 and swap but after that I get the error:

Unable to read the package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: anaconda-base200705161427.x86_64

and then intallation stops.
I tried to download the dvd iso image of SL5 again and to burn it again on another dvd but i got the same errors. There could be some problem with the download or the burn process? I burn with Nero and WinXP 32bit version...

Yes, that sounds unrelated to the graphics driver.

OK PROBLEM SOLVED!

I downloaded again the iso image this time using a ftp client and now the test cd utility of the linux installer said that everything was right. I still had the same problem: blank screen just after the messagges:

Running Anaconda, the Scientific Linux Sistem Installer - please wait
Probing for video card: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0402
Attempting to start X Server
Waiting for X Server to start...

but this time I managed to install Scientific Linux (SL) v5 x86_64 64-bit version in textual mode with no errors.

After the reboot, i downloaded the nVIDIA driver for Linux 64-bit with

wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...14.11-pkg2.run

and then i installed it with

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run.

Everything ok during install. I started the X Server with the command

startx

and it correctly started! Then I also changed the line:

id:3:initdefault:

with

id:5:initdefault:

in the file:

/etc/inittab

to make 5 the default runlevel (multiuser graphic mode) so that X Server will start automatically at the end of the boot process.

Now everything is ok. Thanks everybody. Hope this could help somebody else.
