Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is on its way!

Well, I've had it with my Monsoon II TEC. I cannot have a quiet PC no matter what I do thanks to this thing. Plus, according to reviews, there are cooler air cooled CPU coolers on the market. So, I've given up on it. I'm about to sell the thing for about $70-$100.

I've just placed an order for a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. Lets see how this thing does when I get it in a few days. :D

BTW, should I order another fan as well? I already have an antec LED fan on the side panel of my case, and I was just planning on pulling that one and using it. Suggestions appreciated! :)

If you like quiet then i'd think about getting some 140mm fans ,They come with 120mm converters.
I dont know if they ar any good though.

That's an idea. I'll see how the 120mm Antec fan fits on there before I jump the gun on a 140mm. Sounds good though.

This is sucking...

I just started running some tests, and the CPU @ 3.2Ghz is now idling around 40-42c. Is that normal for a Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme? I was under the impression that temperatures were going to be much lower than they are. Currently @ dual prime torture test, It's holding @ 50C. From what I remember, the Monsoon II was getting around 30-35 idle and no where above 50c under load. This has me scared a little.

The system is much quieter, but I was under the impression that it would be cooler as well. Was I wrong? :(

BTW, I have an Antec LED 120mm fan blowing across it @ low setting.

I think I may have spoke too soon.

Those first results were running all fans on low. Now, I've turned the 2 front 120mm case fans to high, and the top 200mm case fan to medium, as well as the heatsink fan to high. @ 3.6Ghz under load, the CPU is staying under 60C. With the Monsoon II, the CPU temperatures peaked as high as 65C, and worst was that it was incredibly noisy!. Now, it's noisy at these settings, but it's more of an airy sound rather than a grinding mechanical fan sound.

I guess, the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is the new champion.:nana:

Glad you got it straightened out. I was not familiar with your case but something was not right with your setup. I have been able to keep temps in check up to almost 3.8GHz on an Ultra 650i board with an e6600 using the Ultra 120 Extreme. It looks like you got yours good to go now. ;)

Well, here's the kicker...

With all the case fans set to lowest setting, and the Northbridge fan set to 40%, this computer is nearly dead silent. That's @ 3.2Ghz and 40C idle. I've already tested the computer in gaming, and the computer is rock solid stable. I'm amazed. Our air conditioner outside my room can be heard over the computer . The Hard drive clicking seems loud compared to the rest of my system. Even though the idle is higher than the Monsoon II, the peak temperatures are lower, which means this cooler is functioning properly... and the Monsoon was really loud.

I'll try reseating the Ultra 120 Extreme tomorrow and see if that makes much of a difference. My apartment is usually much much much cooler than my room at this house. We'll see how that goes.

The Antec's are pretty quiet on low, but I recently replaced mine with the Cooler Master double pack 12000rpm 19db led fans available at Compusa. After trolling the web a bit, these look a LOT like Yate Loons based on the LED leads and fan shape. Anyway, they are quieter than the tri-cools and seem to move more air at lower rpms as the spindle is smaller for more fan blade surface area. With the case open, system at idle, fans controlled by the mobo, loudness from top to bottom: Antec Super Cyclone on low, Spot Cool (higher pitched), closely followed by the 8800 GTX, Raptor, CPU cooler (1000rpm), PSU fan, the two case fans (900rpm), Seagate.

The spot cool has been a good trade off as it is quieter than running the case fans at higher speeds, but has targeted airflow on the memory and chipset eliminating hotspots under the GTX and allowing the slower air movement from the case fans to bat clean-up.

My CPU idles at 41c and load is around 50c -53c with my 120 extreme vantec thermaflow 120mm fan, give it afew more hours untill the AS5 sets in and there might be a few more degrees knocked off! ... also i dont have the greatest case\cooling in the world! ..... i dare say that with a decent case(antec 900) that would drop the temps alot more! .... roll on my antec, w00t!

I'd forgotten about the burn in time for new cooling solutions. I let my computer idle overnight, and the idle temp @ 3.2Ghz in a ventilated room has dropped to 36C. Bear in mind, that's with all the fans running @ low speeds, so the case has almost no airflow at all. I'm sure that if I ran the fans a little bit faster, it would cool the processor even better, but I like the silence. :D

Don't forget about AS5 cure time.

FWIW, my Tuniq Tower is whisper quiet and peaks around 50c load on my e4300 @ 3.0.

Heres my idle and load temps, on 1.4750v @ 3.4GHz ..... as i said i reckon with decent case cooling the temps could be even lower!
