black flickering when using compiz (-managers)
i am using compiz, before i tried it with beryl. after an hour or less the screens begins to flicker every 30-60 seks for approx. one millisek. the flickering doesent stop when i start a new wm (like kwin => kwin --replace). the only thing which is helping is to restart X!

i have started to search for the problem with google:

nothing seems to help, this is why i posted here. (havent found a bugreport)
my system:
-suse 10.3 (i586)
-geforce 7600
-driver 100.14.19
-xorg 7.3

the problem seems to be driver release, xorg release and distro-release independent.

sorry for bad english.

Re: black flickering when using compiz (-managers)
I have a very similar problem. Occasionally, my computer will hang for a a few seconds, other times it will freeze up entirely. SysRq + R and CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE do nothing. I remember seeing a similar bug report here, but it's not very helpful: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87692

GeForce Go 7900 GS
Driver 100.14.19
X server version 1.3
kernel 2.6.22

I've seen this occur on compiz, beryl, and compiz-fusion. I can't remember exactly what kernels I've had it occur on, but I know it has been happening to me since Ubuntu 6.10.

Here's a bug report.

It seems to happen when my laptop has been on a while and is getting warm, and possibly when I am downloading something or surfing the web. I have an ipw3945 wireless card, if that helps.

i have an ipw3945 too.
the flickering sometimes causes problems with displaying text. ive edited some code yesterday and after the flickering i have to mark parts of the text to get it displayed correct again.

the bug-report is made randomly 30seks before the flickering began.

Re: black flickering when using compiz (-managers)
Alright, well I'm not entirely sure how to go about figuring out what is causing this exactly. I've been looking around various other forums where people had this problem, and from what I can tell is that most everyone is using a laptop and an intel ipw3945 wireless card. My knowledge of kernel level operations is somewhat limited, does anyone know if it is possible that the wireless card is causing this? It usually happens when I'm doing something over the Internet, or trying to connect to a WAN.

I just found this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=99279 it seems they have a very similar problem, plus they seem to be on track for a fix.

Anyway, so in ubuntu you'd have to add this:

options nvidia_new NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"

in /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc
Mobile is probably not needed but I like having it to check that the arguments actually worked.

Finally I can use my card! Thanks to everyone involved.
