I have basically the same problem. I install 9625, setup the xorg.conf as usual. eeprom.ko isn't there, but I also tried it with the patch. I only get a black screen, although the system seems to be responding. If I switch to a console vt, the screen stays black but I can type in commands and even reboot nicely. I can see that the nvidia kernel module is loaded, Xorg and stuff are there. I tried different setups in xorg.conf like setting the detected devices, ignoring TV and CRT, etc, to no avail.
The previous versions of the driver will freeze my system, so I'm just sticking with the nv driver for the moment. No more eye candy for me!
