Have you ever played Arx Fatalis? It feels sort of like the half way point between the open ended style of an RPG and the action of a game like Dark Messiah (same developer). Its from 2001 or 2002 and it can be a little clunky, but overall its one of my favorite games ever... if you havent played it, you deffinitely should after youre through with Dark Messiah.
