Angry opengl broken after livna nvidia driver update

I performed a fresh install of fedora core 6, the nvidia drivers installed were the nvidia BETA drivers from Everything seemed fine, opengl worked, compiz worked. I upgraded the nvidia driver after being prompted to by pup and doing so and opengl broke. I tried a full system reinstall and cant even get back to the original setup.

glxgears, glxinfo, etc crashes X.

The graphics card is a Geforce 4 ti 4200 128MB.
I have I have tried the legacy drivers and opengl apps dont crash X but segfault trying to get an RBG visual.

so I have the latest drivers (which when I had the beta drivers installed worked)
drivers installed: rpm -qa --qf "%{N} %{V} %{R}\n" | egrep "nvidia"
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia 1.0.9629 1.lvn6
kmod-nvidia 1.0.9629

kernel: 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 #1 SMP Mon Oct 16 14:37:32 EDT 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

I don't have an SMP machine but installing kernel rpms installs the SMP version???
