Hello,
first, are you sure that the cable is OK (did you tested in windows on with other computer?). I had the same problem with a TV-Out cable (some of the cheap cables have pins missing or are not standard so i had to connect 2 pins on the SCART end, http://pinouts.ru/Video/SVideo_pinout.shtml )
