Default Nvidia Drivers

Hello guys I have just picked up Ubuntu from my friend and wanted to give it a try. I downloaded the Linux drivers off the nVidia site, but I am having the hardest time trying to install them. I was wondering if you guys could walk me through it. When I type in the command

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9629-pkg1.run command a blue screen comes up, but with an error that says :

"ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at www.nvidia.com."

I looked at the Readme, but it was to confusing. It's my first time using Linux and my friend is no help to me. I have no clue how to exit the X server and have been searching for a long time. I tried ctrl + alt + F1 - F6 but still no luck. I am using Ubuntu 6.10. Linux Display Drivers Version 1.0-9629.

Thank you guys.
