You were absolutely right! It just so happened that one of the EDID modes got named "1920x1080_120i", which is what actually got used. After renaming my mode line to "1920x1080__120i" I was able to select it, but found it was too fast for my TV. Then changed to 60Hz as shown below and then it worked for 8776.

So for 8776, I see that I had been happily using the 1920x1080 EDID mode all along without knowing it.

So I reloaded 9629 and found that I STILL only see the top half of the display streched to fill the screen. Tried both the EDID mode and my custom mode.

Also played with the new scaling settings in nvidia-settings utility. No difference.

Any other other ideas? Thanks.
