Default GeForce 7600 GS freeze: "irq 114: nobody cared"

On my new system I get random freezes.
When playing 3D games the system will hang in about 1 to 30 minutes. And I also experienced one freeze only running a normal KDE desktop.
When the system is freezed only the SysRQ keys are working, only allowing me to reboot.

I tried the following nVidia drivers: 8776 and 9631
and the following Linux kernel versions: 2.6.17 and 2.6.18

I tried to boot the kernel with the following options
  • irqpoll
  • maxcpus=1
  • acpi=off noapic
  • irqpoll pci=conf1 acpi=noirq maxcpus=1 noapic
  • idle=poll

Every setup resulted in the same freeze.

This is my hardware setup:
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE
  • MSI NX7600GS-T2D256EH, GeForce 7600 GS, 256MB DDR2
  • MSI K9N Platinum, nForce 570 / latest bios (version 1.30)

The following software was used:
  • Debian GNU Linux testing/unstable
  • linux-image-2.6.18-3-amd64/testing uptodate 2.6.18-7
  • linux-image-2.6.17-2-amd64 2.6.17-9 installed: No available version in archive
  • nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-3-amd64 1.0.9631-1+2.6.18-7 newer than version in archive
  • nvidia-glx-ia32/experimental uptodate 1.0.9631-1
  • nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-2-amd64 1.0.8776-3+2.6.17-9 installed: No available version in archive
  • nvidia-kernel-common/testing uptodate 20051028+1
  • nvidia-kernel-2.6-amd64/unstable uptodate 1.0.8776+4
  • nvidia-kernel-source/experimental uptodate 1.0.9631-1
  • nvidia-glx/experimental uptodate 1.0.9631-1

The following messages were logged into the syslog after the freeze:
