If the apps and games are changing screen resolution the refresh rate can change, which then can cause display "shrinkage" shall I say.

Another thing is that if your xorg.conf has only one resolution, 1280x1024 or whatever, changing to a lower resolution puts the display in a smaller area down the bottom left. Adding modes to xorg.conf will fix that.
