Re: Configure 3 displays on SLES 9 using nvidia Quadro NVS 440
We are glad to announce the successful resolution of setting up the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card on the HP xw6400 workstation.
To recap, this what we wanted to do:
We wanted to set up a Quadro4 440 NVS graphics card on an HP xw6400 Workstation and configure it with a 3 screen so we could have separate X Desktops on each screen.
After numerous experiments with different nvidia drivers, fresh installations of the operating system, upgrades of kernel, etc. we still could not resolve the problem.
We knew that the same configuration was working on another system (HP xw6200) using the same NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card and same drivers. It was only when performing a new OS installation on the xw6200, where the same configuration did not work, when we could actually compare identical things:
- same hardware (HP xw6200 Workstation, Quadro4 440 NVS graphics card)
- same OS, kernel, patches, etc. (SLES 9, 2.6.5-7.244-smp, patchlevel 3)
- same nvidia driver (1.0.9755)
- older installation --> working configuration / fresh installation --> not working configuration
After examining a couple of files we noticed that the kernel in the fresh (default) installation was booting with the option vga=0x31a. This option allows you to select a particular video mode (e.g. standard 80x25 mode available on all display adapters (normal VGA), standard 8-pixel font mode: 80x43 on EGA, 80x50 on VGA (extended VGA), etc.)
It seems that booting with this parameter the system loads the VESA framebuffer which at some points conflicts with the nvidia driver, thus not allowing to configure the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 (both ports at the same time).
Removing just this option from the boot loader we were able to set up all 3 monitors to work simultaneously using the the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card.
