Default system hungs w/ 9631 as soon as X starts

I have a problem with the 9631 driver. Here is my system:
Debian Sarge
debian stock kernel 2.6.8-3-k7
on-board graphic card: NVCrush11 [GeForce2 MX Integrated Graphics]
XFree86 4.3

Normally the system is running with a nvidia 7174 driver that comes bundeled in a debian package; there are no problems with this driver. I'm now trying to upgrade to a 9631 driver. I downloaded the driver from nvidia site, and installed it after completly removing the old driver. When trying to start X, I'm getting the new nvidia logo (full screen), and then the systme freezes - no mouse, no keyboard, and I cannot even ssh into it from another machine.

I tried installing the driver with both --force-tls=new and classic but got the same results.

I'm attching the nvidia bug report - it was obtained when running the *old* driver, as I couldn't access the machine when the problem occurs.

I would appreciate any help.
