Default Having trouble installing Ubuntu 6.10

This is my first attempt at Linux. Heard good things from Ubuntu so I thought I would give it a try. Having trouble getting past the first part of the install. This is a fresh install on a drive that previously had Vista RC2. Screen hangs on the Xloader server or something like that. It appears that it does not recognize my display or card. I know this is a noob post but I cannot seem to find help on this issue. Is my hardware not supported on this distro? If not, can yall recommend a comparable distro?
