Well js22, it just doesn't sound like you can get any satisfaction. Here are a couple more thoughts on it.

I bit the bullet and booted up WinXP to pull some more modelines from PowerStrip. Hope they don't just increase your frustration. All are based on an industry standard as specified.

Other thought is this: I mentioned much earlier in this thread that an S-video/Component splitter works for HDTV. You just have to change xorg.conf for a TV-out configuration. See "Appendix H" in nvidia docs for detail.
Frankly, I'm at a loss to understand why NV can push 1080i in analog form out the S-video port but can't push it out the DVI port. Go figure.
