"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good idea in this case because every time they push a new kernel/kernel update you have to recompile the drivers from source. Sticking with the drivers provided in the repos is a good idea in this case because they'll push a new nvidia-glx package.

Run nvidia-settings to see the driver version you're using, AFAIK it's 1.0.9755
