Run nvidia-settings to see the driver version you're using, AFAIK it's 1.0.9755
I've used Linux in the past on my servers, but this is my first Linux desktop usage. Coming into it I'm a bit tenative, so your advice is generally what I'm leaning towards.
Anyway, it hadn't even hit me to check the driver version before I asked. D'oh!
