Yes, I tried those steps. I may have gotten a different error after trying that (one that mentioned the 100.14.09 drivers), I can't remember. I tried Envy after that.
  • All dev tools are installed
  • I have the linux-headers installed according to Synaptic
  • I did have to install xserver-xorg-dev
  • I purged nvidia-glx
  • Trying to remove linux-restricted-modules or linux-restricted-modules-common resulted in Synaptic wanting to remove linux-generic which I thought was bad, so I added DISABLED_MODULES="nv" instead.

I will have another go at this tonight and post the errors right after that.
