Default 100.14.11 driver hangs the Ubuntu box

This is the tail of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:

modprobe nvidia
does not produce errors. However if X started the box hangs (remote terminal session reports host disappeared)

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run --sanity
reports OK

The nvidia-bug-report.log is attached.

Any ideas where to look for a problem? what to start from, etc?

Thanks in advance.
