Both systems were base LFS, on the 1066 it was unoptimized, on the 703 everything was compiled just for it, with "-O3 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer".
The difference was not just in some apps, it was in all. Login was faster. Bash ran faster. Boot was the same, because both systems had optimized kernels though. Compiling was faster (and the gcc was not
optimized with profiles, which makes it about 9% faster than normal builds). I can not try any more apps, since I've rebuilt my base sys (the one on the P3-1066) a couple of times, and it's also fully optimized now. But compiling is a lot more cpu-intensive than media playing, it takes everything a cpu got.
