I personally like
/root = 20%
/home =80% - 1-2 gigs for a swap.
All settings and dl's etc can be saved in home should you want to try another "same based" OS, ie 'debian based'.
I understand separate /root, /home, /temp. and /var will provide greater security.
Maybe someone more proficient can elaborate on that.
