You could just edit your boot parameters in /boot/grub/menu.lst
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.22-10-generic
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-10-generic root=UUID=6f2aae19-2b5d-43cf-80ed-a21018cd0c03 ro no=AHCI
Not sure if that's the correct syntax, but it would boot that way every time after.
On your X-Fi..did you run alsa-config?
