Default Need a good Ubuntu learning resource

My Advanced Java instructor dropped the bomb on us this week. He's decided to teach the Enterprise Java course next semester and has informed us we will have to be able to have our applications working in both windows and linux. He passed out some DVD's with Ubuntu on them... I guess.. I have no idea how to get this up and working with VMWare yet but I need to get some sort of basic working knowledge of this OS by mid January.

Anyways... any suggestions for learning material for using Ubuntu?? Please keep in mind I have never touched linux so it needs to start with the very basics. Thanks for any help.
