Do you enjoy playing through the game with framerates the speed of your average photo album? I think his display applies more to the masses than what you're suggesting he do. There isn't a user out there at this point that can run the very high shader spec in DX10 at a decent framerate. It's too taxing on the current hardware.
Parallax occlusion mapping takes no more than a 1fps hit and it works with high shaders.
