Yesterday I tried switching from the open source 'nv' driver on Ubuntu 7.10 to the binary 'nvidia' driver from NVIDIA. If it matters, I used the 'Envy' script from here: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
At first all I got was a black screen when X started, but I got past that by adding the following to my xorg.conf:
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
Now I can get X to start, but there are many thin colored vertical stripes on the right hand side of my screen, and the bottom of the screen is a duplicate of what I see on the top of the screen.
You can see the output of 'nvidia-bug-report.sh' here:
Some additional details which may or may not be relevant:
- Dell Latitude c840 Laptop
- Geforce 4 440 Go video card
- Linux 2.6.22-14-386
Anyone have any idea what is causing this, or how to fix it? Please let me know if any more information is needed to help diagnose the problem.
