At this point, I'm honestly surprised they haven't just rebranded the old drivers with a new version and released those. Seems like the next logical step in their "support" for FreeBSD.
Thankfully, they HAVE indeed proven me wrong. I just updated the drivers, and glxgears shows a nice increase in framerate. 1280x1024x24 bit color:

3203 drivers:
6142 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1228.400 FPS
6429 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1285.800 FPS
6419 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1283.800 FPS
6323 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1264.600 FPS
5921 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1184.200 FPS
6396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1279.200 FPS
6443 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1288.600 FPS
6338 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1267.600 FPS

4365 drivers:
7782 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1556.400 FPS
8228 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1645.600 FPS
8409 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1681.800 FPS
8356 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1671.200 FPS
8408 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1681.600 FPS
8393 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1678.600 FPS
8432 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1686.400 FPS
8396 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1679.200 FPS

I just hope that now the drivers are a bit more unified (is that the right word?), so that updates don't take over 6 months.

Edit: Forgot to mention, this is with a GeForce 2 Ti
