I got the same problem. Just edit (as root) the file /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Envy/classes.py and replace the statement nvmanlatest = '169.07' with nvmanlatest = '169.09' and you're done!

Note: I had to first uninstall the former NVidia driver via Envy and then install the new one to get the X server to start on boot. But now I'm at last rewarded with silence
