You should read the manual and check the list of supported resolutions(which are input specific). The TV supports most of the resolutions up to 1360x768, but has to upscale them to fill the screen. If you want to have larger resolutions, your only option is to go with interlaced ones which are only good for movies; games tend to look horrible. The best pic quality is achieved by using the TV's native resolution.

It entirely depends on viewing distance. A 24" monitor at a distance of 80cm is actually as big as a 40" TV seen from a distance of ~2m.
