If you are experiencing stability problems, you should make sure that your kernel was built without optimizations or debug information; it's usually a good idea to try disabling AGP as well, as AGP related problems are not uncommon on Linux and FreeBSD. If you are using a VESA console, you should try disabling it as well: using two different, independent drivers for the same hardware is asking for trouble. In terms of the KDE segfaults, you need to build/install/boot the kernel after patching for the changes to take effect.
