Your hardware is almost a decade old. On ubuntu's minimum specs it is noted that even if you adhere to them - graphical stuff will not be satisfactory. This is because some people don't use linux for the desktop (dns, dhcp, routers, etc.) - minimum specs apply best to them. For a graphical desktop running an '08 OS you might want to cut the age of your hardware down by AT LEAST half (don't go older than 5 years?) or run an older OS with less bloat and features.
