The biggest problem with the GTX 280 is the price. The GPU is too big to come in a cheap board. You also have the 1GB of DDR3 RAM and the 512-bit memory interface. These help in gmaes now and will be even more help in the future. There is never a "perfect" time to buy a high-end video card. I'm sure the GTX 280 will drop in price over time, especially when it is no longer the flagship card. Still, don't expect to buy one for $300 or less any time soon. You can't even pick up a GeForce 8800 Ultra for that now.
