My brand new BFG GTX 280 OC was getting to 110 C and shutting itself down a few minutes after launching any 3D app. My case has good airflow. Even so, I had to rip out the heatsink and cooler and slap on a Danger Den waterblock to watercool this card AND underclock it slightly to default GTX 280 speeds in order to get it to run within an acceptable temperature range. It's working fine now, stable as a rock after hours of Crysis gaming sessions and leaving Furmark running overnight, but it's obvious there are major heat buildup issues with these cards if you're going to use air cooling.
I like Macs *and* PCs. Each to its own...
