Sounds like it's time for 64 bit OS for you. I had the same problem trying to run the cinematic mod v 8 for HL2. It uses more than 3 gigs of ram and with 32 bit not seeing more than 3.2 gigs, the game crashes frequently.

I've ran this updated texture crysis with the mster config 3.XX with zero problems. yeah it takes a while longer to load but the system itself is happy with 4 gigs of ram. Alt+Tabbing out of the game shows plenty of ram left.
