Default Performance problems with 173.14.12 on fresh Ubuntu installation

As described in the title I experience performance problems with driver 173.14.12 on a fresh Ubuntu (8.04) installation (X.org 7.3, compiz-fusion 0.7.4). I always experienced this problems since I bought my GeForce 6200 LE in spring 2007. But I didn't had the time to check the things recommended in the FAQ and http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...hapter-05.html. Now with a fresh Ubuntu installation drivers, links and libs hopefully aren't messed.

Here's the output of glxgears with very good results; usually I get about 350 FPS.

Code:
$ glxgears
2549 frames in 5.0 seconds = 509.696 FPS
2364 frames in 5.0 seconds = 472.208 FPS
2174 frames in 5.0 seconds = 434.800 FPS
2595 frames in 5.0 seconds = 518.908 FPS
2745 frames in 5.0 seconds = 548.862 FPS
2747 frames in 5.0 seconds = 549.235 FPS
2814 frames in 5.0 seconds = 562.657 FPS
2833 frames in 5.0 seconds = 566.564 FPS
2836 frames in 5.0 seconds = 567.062 FPS
2812 frames in 5.0 seconds = 562.379 FPS
2715 frames in 5.0 seconds = 541.969 FPS
2594 frames in 5.0 seconds = 518.770 FPS
2631 frames in 5.0 seconds = 526.199 FPS
2376 frames in 5.0 seconds = 475.099 FPS
2423 frames in 5.0 seconds = 484.151 FPS
2711 frames in 5.0 seconds = 541.940 FPS
2751 frames in 5.0 seconds = 550.049 FPS
2503 frames in 5.0 seconds = 500.451 FPS
2595 frames in 5.0 seconds = 518.909 FPS
2619 frames in 5.0 seconds = 523.682 FPS
2039 frames in 5.0 seconds = 407.732 FPS
I also experience artefacts when focus of windows or workspaces switch. I append nvidia-bug-report.log.

According to the link above I found the following files and links:
