Depends on the DVR. I used to hack tivos to connect them to a wired network, though you can do wireless networks as well. The S1 tivos had no ethernet adapter nor USB ports so you had to build your own into it. The S2 tivos have a USB port and you can connect a USB ethernet adapter to that, be it wired or wireless. To be able to extract the video off of it, you have to hack the unit, and doing so can vary by model.

Newer tivos have a tivotogo option (most S2 and later do this, with a few exceptions) where without hacking the unit you can burn it to a dvd by means of your computer.
