For my Lenovo T61, this helps with terminal and open office screen corruption. In /etc/modprobe.d insert the a file "nvidia":
$ cat nvidia
options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1
This forces the powermizer feature into a higher performance state.
You *could* try the beta versions of the nvidia 180 driver, but I'm sticking with ones for which there are Ubuntu packages because they are easier to install/uninstall.
none of the changes that people suggest in xorg.conf have any benefit for me.
