Run 'alsamixer'
Go to the far right of the screen, I have three switches there: IEC958, IEC958 D and ICE9581.
Make sure all those are unmuted.

Then select 'HDA NVidia NVIDIA HDMI (ALSA)' as output for all items in 'Sound Prefrences'.
Select 'HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer)' as the mixer.

Works for me.
