I post you from an vanilla kernel 2.6.28 (ubuntu intrepid)

to compile the kernel it's quite easy using the debian tools in ubuntu

http://mapopa.blogspot.com/2009/01/compiling-2.html
after the kernel was compiled i have installed it with dpkg

Code:
$ sudo dpkg -i /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-vanillaice_2.6.28-vanillaice-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
also downloaded the 180.x driver and installed from comand line
after the gdm was stopped

Quote:
$sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
$sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.22-pkg2.run
$sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
